Book Club Starts
December 19th at 7 PM

In December to celebrate the holidays we’ll be holding a Dirty Santa Book Swap. Please bring a wrapped new or lightly read copy of your favorite book. You’ll then have the chance to unwrap a book or steal one from someone else who has already unearthed the best finds! You can only steal a book twice! Then it’s found it’s permanent home. Let the games begin.

This much-anticipated second collection of stories is signature Ted Chiang, full of revelatory ideas and deeply sympathetic characters. In The Merchant and the Alchemist’s Gate, a portal through time forces a fabric seller in ancient Baghdad to grapple with past mistakes and the temptation of second chances. In the epistolary Exhalation, an alien scientist makes a shocking discovery with ramifications not just for his own people, but for all of reality. And in The Lifecycle of Software Objects, a woman cares for an artificial intelligence over twenty years, elevating a faddish digital pet into what might be a true living being. Also included are two brand-new stories: Omphalos and Anxiety Is the Dizziness of Freedom.

In this fantastical and elegant collection, Ted Chiang wrestles with the oldest questions on earth—What is the nature of the universe? What does it mean to be human?—and ones that no one else has even imagined. And, each in its own way, the stories prove that complex and thoughtful science fiction can rise to new heights of beauty, meaning, and compassion

We encourage you to buy local and support independent businesses! Otherwise, you can pick up the latest copy of the book below

  1. Jennifer Butler says:

Am I suppose to pay before I go? If so how long in advance does it need to be paid?

    • Marie Barakat says:

You do pay before you go, and you pay online through this site. You can pay on the day of the meeting, so there is no rush. Hope to see you there!!

      • Jennifer Butler says:

I only read half the book so far. 🙁 I was in the process of reading three books, crocheting, card making, sewing, babysitting, etc. I was hoping to finish by tonight. I can’t seem to stay focused on reading today. I’m letting everything distract me. The book club I went to last night said to us to come even when you haven’t finished the book. How do you guys do it?

        • Marie Barakat says:

Jennifer, sorry I saw this so late. You can absolutely still come. Obviously, there will be spoilers but you can come and meet new people and enjoy some delightful company.
